It all started in high school when my mother sewed me my first sexy pants: plaid bellbottoms for Halloween. They fit like a glove, showed off my assets, and everyone wanted a pair. After that, people started flocking to our place for sexy, well fitting costumes. From policewoman to naughty nurse, ballet to burlesque dancers, and everything in between, our old mirror saw a whole gamut of creations. Since my mother had no real training in the world of clothing design, she sent me to a small, but thriving, home based business Heirloom Creations to learn the ropes from the owner Diane. She had me working away on her industrial machines and doing all facets of the business with her, which later came in quite handy. I proceeded on to fashion design at the local university college where one of the final projects in school was working with a difficult fabric. While looking in the fabric stores, I stumbled upon a bolt of polyurethane, which I discovered could be quite tricky to work with, if one didn’t have the correct equipment. I passed the project with flying colours and fell in love with the tricky fabric. I plugged away at the fashion design program, graduating on the Dean’s List for my efforts. I looked around for a clothing company that I would be interested in working for, and didn’t find any that I could be happy at. So, using the skills Diane taught me, I started my own business. I tried several different markets to see what would sell and what I would be happy with, and finally discovered the fetish world through a friend, and thus opened my eyes to a world of year-round Halloween who loves my favourite fabric! Since everyone I knew was more on the ‘vanilla’ side of the fetish world, I started to design for the coquettes and flirts in the industry. I found that many of the harder core fetishists also like to delve into the vanilla side as well, so this was definitely a market that I could love.
In the first few years, Flirt Designs was run out of a home studio underneath my parent’s patio. When running close to imposed deadlines, the whole family pitched in to help from punching grommets to even modeling! Fast forward to today. We still take pride in doing everything ourselves, from the designs to the photo shoots, the marketing to the website, and we never forget our humble beginnings! |
